How About A Light RomCom on A Friday Night?

I don’t normally cave in to peer pressure. I don’t do drugs and I don’t smoke. If everyone else jumped off a bridge, I would try to convince them not to. I would certainly not join in on the jumping. So when the rest of America was going crazy for “Black Swan”, I was not rushing to the theater to see it.  This is because I am a baby and HATE any kind of scary/horror movie. HATE HATE HATE. I end up having nightmares for weeks. I know this movie is more psychological and not really a slasher movie, but it still sounded like nothing I wanted to be a part of. The previews looked scary, and the critics used words like “disturbing” to describe it. No thank you. Give me Kate Hudson and “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” please.

With all that said, I have “Black Swan” waiting for me on my TV right now. Literally, I’m looking at the opening scene.  How did this happen, you may ask? Well, my interest piqued when Natalie Portman won a Golden Globe and then an Oscar for her performance in the film. I also LOVE Natalie Portman as an actress/person, and was genuinely curious to see if this film (and her acting in it) lived up to the hype. After asking around a little bit, I found out that the film wasn’t as disturbing as reviews made it out to be. I also heard that it was worth seeing once. The final straw came when I drove home from work and our local video store had a huge sign that read WE HAVE BLACK SWAN out front. Clearly this film is something to see. C is willing to watch it with me even though all he knows about it is “they dance around a lot and murder each other.” He is a little confused, but we forgive him. I know people don’t get murdered. This is a great demonstration of how rumors start. I also know he must have heard about the Natalie/Mila scene because everyone knows about it, but I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt and assuming that has not played into his willingness to watch whatsoever.

So off I go to watch this movie. I’ll let you know what I think. Don’t fail me, N.P.
