The Kardashian Appeal

Today I scared the crap out of C as he was sleeping peacefully as I shrieked and gasped. No, we were not being robbed. Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries had announced their engagement! I know there are a lot of Kim Kardashian haters out there, but I absolutely love her and I love them together.

Actually, I kind of feel like I know them. Go ahead and laugh, but it’s true. In fact, this news made my day. Kim has been through lots of break-ups and rocky relationships, so I’m so glad she found someone great. She’s also been very open about the fact that she had always imagined she would be married with children by this point in her life. I’m so happy that she has finally found the right person for her and will get to have a beautiful wedding. She’s only 30, so kids are definitely still an option for her too. I think she will be a terrific mom. I was afraid she was going to be the type of person who was so caught up in her career that she sort of “forgot” to get married and have children, but I’m glad to see that she is still keeping her personal life a priority.

I know, I know. I don’t know this person or her fiance. I don’t know anything about her life. Why do I care so much? I think it says a lot about her as a brand that random people like me are so invested in her. She knows how to create mass appeal. Yeah, a sex tape originally launched her career, but her own marketing instincts and skills kept her popular when we were left saying, “Ray-J, who?” Girls and women like her and her sisters because they’re extremely well-dressed, their makeup is immaculate, their hair is always enviable, and yet (on some level) they remind you of you and your family. Or they seem like someone you’d want to be friends with. They are honest, funny, and often inappropriate. They’re both who you want to be, and what your family could be if you were a little richer and a little more made-up.

I know people say some terrible things about Kim, and I know it’s easy to judge her based solely on appearance, but if you actually watch any of the Kardashian shows it’s pretty easy to tell that she’s actually a sweet, funny, extremely family-oriented person. She used to have a friendship/business relationship with Paris Hilton, but she is certainly not that type of person. There’s actually something going on in-between her ears. She actually has a heart and even a soul. Paris… is questionable.  Needless to say, I am definitely on Team Kimmie K.

The fact that she ended up with Kris Humphries makes me love her even more. Kim is gorgeous, one of the most famous women in the world, and is worth billions of dollars. Kris is a D-list basketball player–my boyfriend the sports nut had barely heard of him–he is a little goofy looking and she probably doubles or triples his earnings in one week. But the fact of the matter is that she loves him for him. She’s described him as “having a really good heart” and always talks about how great their relationship is. In every picture they just look happy.

Your loss, Reggie

I LOVE that Kim didn’t end up with some A-list movie star, quarterback, model, etc. We already have one Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen, and they are fun, but that football player/cheerleader-type pairing gets old after a while. Could she have dated Derek Jeter or A-Rod or Peyton Manning or LeBron James? Probably. She’s dated very successful athletes in the past. But the guy who ended up putting a ring on it seems much more low-key. He isn’t super-famous, he isn’t disgustingly rich, he’s attractive, but he’s no Gabriel Aubry (who she’s been linked to in the past). But Kim and Kris always look happy and in love, and that trumps all. That is so un-Hollywood, where it’s about status and wealth. I love that Kim didn’t feed into that.

I am so happy for her and can’t wait to see pictures of the wedding! Apparently this what the ring looks like:

Holy guacamole! That might actually be the biggest diamond I’ve ever seen in my entire life. It looks like a ring pop! It’s apparently worth $2 million! To be honest, I don’t think I’d even want that ring. First of all, I don’t like the cut. Second of all, it’s just too much. I’d be terrified to lose it/have it stolen. I like Khloe’s ring a lot better:

Yeah, it’s massive, but there’s a little more going on besides just a ridonkulous diamond. The band has some intricate detail on it. It also isn’t so enormous that it looks fake, like Kim’s. I think the round cut helps tone it down a bit. I am not a fan of the blunt, square cut of Kim’s diamond. But let’s be honest, if someone proposed to me with Kim’s ring I would definitely take it and love it. That diamond is gorgeous. It’s just not my personal style.
What do you guys think of the future Mr. and Mrs. Humphries? What about the rock? Are you as excited as I am about all of this?
