How To Make It Happen in 2012

One of my goals for myself at the start of this new year is to stop dreaming about things I want to achieve and to start making things happen. Less talk, more action. I know I spend WAY too much time focusing on what could go wrong, what is not perfect, and what I could try to change. This takes precious time away from what is going right, what is perfect, and what I am doing well and can keep working on. I need to flip my energy around. Are you like this too?

I’m going to find tangible ways to get closer to my dreams and goals. I really want to be a writer. I want to run this blog and write for magazines and websites and write books. So maybe I’m not ready to write a bestseller yet, but there are ways I can take small steps toward my goals.

To jump-start this plan, I’m going to my school’s Career Development Center. Sometimes I feel like a loser because I’m living in a small city which is also the city where I went to college. I dream about New York or Chicago or L.A. and think, “Why am I wasting my twenties in a tiny city like this?” but then there are other times when I realize there are advantages to being here. I need to focus on those instead of freaking myself out about my current situation. One of these advantages is that I have easy access to my school’s resources. Time to use them. I’m going to meet with one of the women who runs the center to talk to her about my career. I’m going to tell her exactly what my goals are. I’ll tell her my plans to get there and see what she thinks. I’ll have her look at my resume. It will be good to verbalize exactly where I want to end up, and it’s also good because she is in the loop in terms of where alumni from my school are working and where jobs are opening up. I need to be more proactive about networking, and this is a good first step. My school has different online alumni networks and I need to use them more. No more talking about it, time to do it.

Another part of my new attitude is that I’m taking part in a free webinar called The Make Sh*t Happen Crash Course.   It’s being taught by Jenny Blake, who is a writer and life coach that I discovered a few months ago. I saw an interview with Jenny as I was playing around on Twitter, and her story caught my attention. She had a big-time job at Google but eventually quit to do her own thing. She now runs a successful website called Life After College. She has also published a book and does life coaching sessions and seminars. Jenny’s webinar is all about how to approach a big goal. Jenny has first-hand experience with this, so I’m curious to hear what she has to say. Here’s a description of the webinar from Jenny’s site. If you’re interested you can still sign up. It’s free!

If you are looking for extra support as you go after your own “no regrets” year, stick around: the doors re-open for Make Sh*t Happen on January 11 at 3pm ET.  I’m so excited I can barely stand it! Wondering if the course is right for you? Check out what the inaugural group had to say.

I’m also super excited to host a free Make Sh*t Happen Crash Course webinar on January 11 at 1:30pm PT as a fun way to kick-off the new year and provide a CliffsNotes version of what we cover in case you can’t afford the full course at the moment.

I’ll share my 8-step process for going after a massive goal: everything from big-picture visioning to building a strong support network, surviving the dip, and celebrating. At the very end I will answer any questions potential course enrollees may have. Register here, and please note that the webinar will not be recorded.

What are your goals for 2012? How are you working on getting there?
