The Therapeutic Art of Cleaning Out Your Closet

I know many things in life are thought to be therapeutic. Petting a dog for example, or coloring in a coloring book. But when I’m in true need of a fresh start, when I need to feel physically and mentally cleansed, there’s only one thing to do: I need to clean out my closet.

The great philosopher Eminem once wrote a song about cleaning out his closet. Clearly he knew of the importance of this act too. However I think he meant it more on a figurative level. Or a dissing his crackhead mother level. I’m talking literally here. I mean throwing out old shoes, ragged sweaters, shrunken tops, and jeans that you bought during your chunky stage in college. Throw all of it out. If you keep meaning to wear that dress but haven’t touched it in a year, donate it. Get it out of your sight. As you put these things in bags and free up space in your closet, you’ll literally feel your body get lighter. You’ll breathe a sigh of relief. You never notice how old things weigh on you until they’re gone. I once read a quote that said, “Keep what is useful, beautiful, or important. Delete the rest.” I don’t know who said it (Google was no help) so I can’t attribute it to anyone, but that person was right. If you’re not currently using it/enjoying it, get rid of it. You don’t need it taking up space.

Yesterday I was in the mood for a good cleaning binge. Bye bye, tattered yoga pants. See ya later, dress that’s too fancy for the bar but too casual for any other occasion. Peace out, jeans that are all ripped at the bottom. As I carted the items out of my bedroom I felt like I was levitating off the ground. Out with the old, in with the new. Forward motion. Progress.

Cleaning out your closet is a completely psychological process. As you streamline your closet you’re able to streamline your life. I swear by it.

What other things feel therapeutic to you?
