What Do You Do When You Need Inspiration?

I was all excited to get this book by a guy named Jonah Lehrer. It was all about how creativity works and how you can feel more inspired. The author “spoke” to famous artists and musicians such as Bob Dylan about how they get inspired. Sounds great, right? Right. Until you read this article explaining that Jonah actually made up quotes in the book. And then you find out that the whole disaster lead to the book being pulled off of shelves. So you can’t read it anymore. Sadsies. But that’s okay, you don’t need Mr. Dylan to tell you how to get creative. You can do it on your own.

I have a little trick I use when I need inspiration or I need to be at my peak of creativity: I love to watch great performances and award show acceptance speeches. I know. It’s weird. But it works. There’s something about watching admirable people be awesome at what they do (and then win awards for it) that makes you also want to be excellent. Trust me on this.

For example, if you’re feeling a little unmotivated on this Monday, watch the handsome and talented Aaron Paul (Jesse Pinkman on Breaking Bad, bitch) win an Emmy for his work on the show. Then try to tell me you don’t want to accomplish that goal you’ve had in mind for a while. Perhaps you’re more of a fan of The Sopranos? Well check out James Gandolfini aka Tony Soprano winning an Emmy for his work. Inspiring, right? So get off Pinterest and start creating.

If award show acceptance speeches don’t grab you, let’s try live performances. I won’t lie, as I waited to do my phone interview with Grammar Chic, I watched one of my all-time favorite Lady Gaga performances. I know, I’m a huge nerd, but I think she’s amazingly talented. There’s something really inspiring about watching someone love what they do and be great at it. This is the performance I watched. Seeing her put her heart and soul into the performance and give such a top-notch show made me feel ready to nail my interview. It’s my little nerdy trick, feel free to steal it if you wish.
