I’d been contemplating cutting my hair for a few months. My hair is SO straight and fine that styling it is nearly impossible. No matter how often I use hot rollers or spray, it always just…hangs. If I were famous, I could get a thousand dollars worth of hair extensions and the problem would be solved. But I’m me and my hair budget is limited, so I have to work with what I have. Last time I was at the hair salon, my hairdresser (who has done my hair since I was six, how awesome is that?) encouraged me to try an inverted bob. She explained that the ‘do would work better with my hair’s natural texture, and would help to give me more volume. Like a 7th grader, I was attached to my long locks and refused.
Yet in between visits, I realized how much of a pain my hair had become. I work from home, so I never style it, and when I do it falls flat within minutes. It was making me hot during the warmer weather, and it just wasn’t doing anything interesting. After a quick Facebook poll (nothing can be done without crowdsourcing, right?) I decided that I was ready to take the plunge. Here’s the before:
That’s five inches gone and lots of blonde added. I love it. It feels fresh and summer-y and I know it’ll be much easier to take care of and style.
The initial chop was a little scary but, as my hairdresser Anna pointed out, “It’s just hair.” When your stylist is saying that, you know you should ease up a little bit and give it a shot.
I’ve said this before, but I truly believe that a new haircut can change your life. It’s good to mix things up every so often. It keeps you feeling fresh and provides a new, adrenaline-filled burst of energy. If you’ve been contemplating that new style/color for the summer, just go for it. If it’s an utter disaster? Hey, it’ll grow back.
