My new favorite thing lately is binge-watching episodes of “Orange is the New Black.” Chris and I were skeptical about the show at first, but everyone and their mother was raving about it so we decided to give it a try. If you haven’t seen it, it’s about a WASP-y New Yorker who ends up in prison for a drug smuggling crime she committed ten years ago. Back then she was dating a girl named Alex, now she’s engaged to a guy named Larry (played by Jason Biggs). The show follows Piper Chapman as she navigates her way through women’s prison. Her ex is in there too, so that adds an element of drama.
I find the show absolutely fascinating, and was surprised to learn that it’s actually based on a true story. In fact, the real Piper apparently serves as a consultant for the show. If you love the OITNB as much as I do, you’ll definitely want to check out the book Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison by Piper Kerman. I started it last night and am already halfway through. The TV show upheld a lot of the characters/plot elements found in the book, and it’s a great read.
Also, does anyone else think Taylor Schilling (who plays Piper) looks just like a blonde Katy Perry? I think it every time I watch the show. This show is definitely my new obsession.
