Chris and I had been on the hunt for a new show to watch on Netflix now that we’re caught up on Homeland, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. I know, I know. We have a lot of time on our hands. His brother, Greg, swears by House of Cards so we decided to give it a shot. It’s a Netflix original series, and I die for Orange is the New Black, so it had already earned extra points in my book. Oh yeah, and it’s nominated for roughly three billion Emmys so….there’s that.
After just a few episodes, we’re hooked. The show stars Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, as well as Kate Mara (sister of Rooney). It follows Spacey’s Frank Underwood, a Congressman, as he uses his own puppet master tricks to navigate Washington as he sees fit. I always think Kevin Spacey is a little serial killer-ish (probably watched Seven one too many times) but he’s awesomely creepy as a politician. He brings that same serial killer ominous vibe, while also exuding faux Southern gentleman charm and deep-seated aggression. The show isn’t quite as fast-paced as Homeland or 24, but you still find yourself anxious to see what will unfold next for Frank Underwood. If you were a fan of The West Wing, I have a feeling this show will be right up your alley. Next time you’re ready to Netflix binge, give House of Cards a shot.
