In A New City and Need to Meet People? Meetup.com Should Be Your New Jam

I’m all about trying various methods to meet new people these days, and have become hooked on the website Meetup. I had heard about it a while ago, but wasn’t really trying very hard to make connections in Syracuse so I didn’t really do anything about it. However, now that I’m getting settled in a new city, the site sounded like the perfect way to meet people in the area. Meetup is a website that allows you to attend various social gatherings with like-minded people. Love cooking? In your twenties? There’s probably a twentysomething chefs meet up. Total wino? Join the wine lovers group. I love that you can customize your experience and use it to meet the kind of people you enjoy spending time with. It doesn’t matter whether you hate the bars, love poetry, or are obsessed with rock climbing, the site puts you in touch with other people who are into your hobbies too.

Yesterday my roommate and I created a book club on Meetup, and then I went solo and created a “Charlotte Newbies” group. We’ve had a great response so far, even though the events we planned have only been scheduled for a day or so. Is it going to be a little weird to host an event with a bunch of people I don’t know? Maybe. But I’ve already been chatting with a few people who are going to attend, and I can’t wait to meet them. I think it’ll be a really good way to get introduced to potential new friends.

Let’s face it, you can’t meet friends in a bar. It’s hard to meet friends in exercise classes because you’re sweaty and focused. The best way to make friends is when you go to an event where you know everyone else is looking to meet people too. That’s what makes Meetup so handy. If you’re new to a city or are looking to expand your social circle in your current home, I’d definitely recommend giving the site a try!
