Sadly, Maya Angelou passed away at age 86, so I spent a good chunk of time today reading over some of her most famous quotes and poems, as well as reading articles about her life and work. Of course she was a brilliant writer, but Maya Angelou was also the ultimate girl’s girl. Her messages are about embracing the situations you face and making the most of them, instead of letting yourself become a victim. She was all about being a powerful female, even in the midst of intense pain or darkness. There was no playing the delicate heroine. Dr. Angelou also focused heavily on letting love into your life, and sharing that love with others. I have so much respect for women who support other women instead of trying to be cutthroat. Her messaging was definitely about being a bright spot in someone else’s day and I love that. A few of my favorite Maya Angelou quotes that I’ve read include:
“Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud”
“I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw something back.”
“You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.”
and another personal favorite:
“When people show you who they are, believe them.”
I love strong female writers like her and like Nora Ephron (my ultimate girl crush). Their depth and insight are so powerful. Rest in peace, Dr. Angelou, and thanks for the gorgeous words and inspiration.
