The Smartest $100 Purchase I’ve Made in a Long Time

I try to be pretty careful(ish) with my money, because I don’t have a lot of extra cash just lying around and I’d like to be able to buy a condo or a house in the next few years. But yesterday I spent $100 without blinking an eye and it was one of the best choices I’ve ever made.

The $100 was used to have a cleaning lady do a deep clean of my apartment. At first I was so opposed to this idea. It seemed very Kim Kardashian of me to have a cleaning lady at all, plus my apartment is small so I figured I should be able to manage it on my own. But with my travel schedule and a lot of deadlines, I was spending so much time on other things that cleaning wasn’t getting done.

I’ve always read about how your environment significantly impacts your mental state, and I could tell it was true. I kept noticing dust gathering and a tub that was becoming a science experiment, and I was starting to feel overwhelmed. I decided to suck it up and pay someone to take care of the problem for me.

Turns out this was the best decision ever, no matter how frivolous it might sound. When my cleaning lady left, the place felt so much more zen. Instead of wanting to rush out to a coffee shop to get work done, I actually felt peaceful at home and I wasn’t stuck spending hours scrubbing and dusting to get it that way.

I’m generally against spending a lot of money on something that doesn’t give you a real benefit. I’d rather go to a friend’s house and drink wine so we can catch up without spending a ton of money on dinner. However in this case the money I shelled out was absolutely worth it. I saw the benefit immediately. When it comes to your mental health and general feelings of happiness, if you can pay to decrease your stress level, do it. It will absolutely be worth it.
